Channel Your Inner Witch This Halloween
Traditionally when we hear the word 'witch' we probably think Wicked or Roald Dahl, all green skin and hook noses. But this comedic idea of what a witch truly represents is neither fair nor accurate. Now there are an increasing number of modern day witches who will be the first to debunk these archaic views. From fierce feminism to personal empowerment, modern witches bring a whole new meaning to magic.
But what does Witchcraft involve nowadays and how can we begin to adopt some of their positive beliefs and spiritual practices this Halloween?
SMUDGING
Smudging, or other rites involving the burning of sacred herbs or resins, is a ceremony practiced by some witches. This age-old ritual has changed forms and duration, but the essence is intact: Burn the negativity and create grounds for positive changes. So whether it's bad energy or a toxic ex you can feel lingering around your home, it's time to get the sage out.
TAROT
Using tarot cards to tackle life problems is a tradition steeped in history both within Witchcraft and outside of it. It's also one that has seen a resurgence in recent years. Contrary to popular belief this is not about predicting the future but more facing obstacles in life and giving them a voice in order to work through these and in turn become a better more balanced person. When you put it like that it sounds like a no brainer really so we'll be reaching for our pack this Spooky Season for sure.
POSITIVE BELIEFS
Although many Wiccans claim to draw inspiration from ancient cultures, it can be seen very much as a religion of our times. The Goddess they celebrate provides a female face for the divine, appealing to feminists and those who seek “girl power.” Wiccans see divinity in nature, which resonates with growing environmental concerns, particularly among the young. Alongside this Wiccan witches have one overriding rule, “harm none and do as you will.”
A girl power environmentalist who aims not to harm others? Who wouldn't want to get on board with that!
CAST A SPELL
Witches believe in magic, and regularly cast spells in a variety of ways. One of the most common and evocative of these is candle magic. Everything about it is intentional eg: If it’s a love spell you need, you’d choose either a pink candle for romantic love, or red for sexual. You’d light it during the full moon if you want a real epic love, or new moon if you want to mark the beginning of new love. You can cast a spell for pretty much anything so if there's something you are longing for in life right now why not give it a go? If you don't truly believe in it though, at least this could make a super fun activity for your witch-themed Halloween night with the girls!
CRYSTALS
Crystals are used for relieving stress and anxiety, helping you understand yourself better, blocking EMF radiation, helping you sleep better at night, improving your self-esteem, helping you cope with grief and trauma, as well as focussing or concentrating, and being more creative. For almost any trouble you’re having: There’s a crystal for that. Here's a few things you can do with crystals.
- Hold them
- Place them where you’ll see them often
- Meditate or pray with them
- Keep them in your pocket
- Combine them with your essential oils
- Place them under your pillow at night
- Wear them (check out our selection of crystal pieces here)
